Sarge’s Dog Walk a Success!
Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation held its 12th Annual Downtown Dog Walk Saturday, Aug. 5. The fundraiser supports the homeless dogs and cats of Haywood County — and is a much-loved community event, bringing hundreds of dogs and their families to Waynesville’s Main Street.
The walk began and ended at the Historic Haywood County Courthouse on Main Street in Waynesville. In the front place of honor, Terry and Ronnie Hedrick walked with a home-made covered wagon for their tripod dog, Kirby, whose picture graced this year’s T-shirt. The tricked-out wagon was pulled by the Hedricks’ dog, Polaris.
Reports are that good time was had by all and the event was a definite success. Waynesville Mayor Gavin Brown read a proclamation declaring Aug. 5, 2017 as ‘Rescue Pet Adoption Day,’ in honor of Sarge’s Dog Walk.
Board president Carol Viau welcomed the crowd and gave the happy news that Sarge’s has saved 7,740 animals to date in its 11-year history.
Sarge’s Administrator, Tiffani Watts, thanked event co-chairs Felisha Yon and Jim Ray and their volunteers, who put on the event.
Tiffani announced the winners of the ‘most money collected,’ with the top place going to Nikola Rubley; second place, Nancy Bulluck; and third place, Paula Gatens. These three Sarge’s supporters, plus friends of Sophia Humpidge, collected more than $5,000 for the 2017 Dog Walk.
There were hilarious doggie contests, with 99.9 KISS Country personalities Eddie Foxx and Sharon Green returning as guest judges, joined by WLOS-TV reporter, Rex Hodge. Attendees saw dogs compete in best-dressed dog, best dog trick and best tail-wagging dog. Top awards went to — Best Dressed: Molly (dog) and Wayne Ruth; Best Tail Wagger: Kora (dog) and Dillon Holliday; and Best Trick: Spencer (dog) and Janet Laurain.
“It was a great day for the dogs and cats of Haywood County,” said Tiffani. “Thanks to all who worked so hard to put on Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation 12th Annual Downtown Dog Walk. A big ‘thank you’ goes to the judges, Eddie Foxx, Sharon Green, and Rex Hodge, and the emcee, Greg Kidd.”
“We are grateful for the Dog Walk lead sponsors — Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort and The Mountaineer — and for all the pet-lovers who contributed to sponsorship and all those who participated in the walk,” said Felisha Yon, Sarge’s board member and event co-chair.
Felisha kept the party going and invited everyone to the ‘After Party’ at The Dog House Waynesville.
